Says:I have an old Nikor lens 50mm 1.8, when I attach it to the camera it's says no lens attached. Is this lens compatible or is there somthing in the settings I need to set. I thought all old nikon manual focus lenses could be used. Maybe I'm not doing somthing on the cameraOriginally posted at 12:52AM, 22 February 2014 PDTJeanette62 edited this topic 67 months ago.says:Try to input the non-cpu lens information to camera's setup.67 months agosays:How do I do that I'm new to nikon dslrOriginally posted 67 months ago.Jeanette62 edited this topic 67 months ago.says:Unlike the D7000 and a few other Nikon DSLR cameras, the D5xxx series will not allow you to input non-cpu lens information. This lens is an AI-S manual focus lens. You must use it in manual mode, setting the aperture on the lens and the shutter speed on the camera.

You will not see any exposure metering information; use your best guess and/or chimp using the LCD. It will, however, show you the focusing aid (the green dot will show up when the subject is in focus).Just FYI, even with the metering disabled, using a D5xxx series camera with an older Nikkor manual focusing lens isn't difficult. You can also mount pre-AI lenses, a HUGE advantage, and something the D7xxx cameras can't do!Originally posted 67 months ago.jprme edited this topic 67 months ago.says:Your limited to manual and I think shutter priority with manual lenses. The D3k and D5k series have no way to manually input lens data to tell the camera how to meter. The D7k series does have this feature. So basically just leave the camera in manual mode. You'll have to guess your settings. You can also enable the range finder to aid you in focusing.I used an even older pre AI 50mm 1.8 SC auto on my D3100 for a while.

The rangefinder did help allot with finding focus. But since the lens didn't have a CPU my D3100 couldn't communicate with the lens and allow the camera to properly set the exposure. It also wouldn't allow the light meter to work at all since the camera had no way of 'seeing' what I was pointing it at.As stated already its not hard to use a modern camera with an old lens. I actually did have fun trying to set the exposure. It was also cool to be able to see how your DOF changes instantly when you turn the aperture ring. (The viewfinder and live view display will darken when you select a smaller aperture).Originally posted 67 months ago.DigitalCanvas72 edited this topic 67 months ago.says:Hi, in case it's not clear, turn the main dial to M for manual. Either put the aperture roughly where u want it for the depth of field u want, or put the shutter where u want it to avoid motion blur.

Then adjust the other for the exposure u want. If u need to, increase the iso but always shoot at 100 if u can. Re the aperture, the camera will keep it fixed at about 5.6-8 while u use the viewfinder so u canon't see the image get brighter or darker as u adjust it. To adjust exposure, just take a photo with autopreview on and see if it needs to be brighter or darker. I have several of these lenses and u find u can become quite adept at using the camera controls when u need to.67 months agosays:P.s. May save u some time. The dial sets shutter speed, hold down the aperture button and the dial then sets exposure.

Hold down the fn button and the dial then sets iso. I use a sb-24 flash which complements manual lenses perfectly.67 months ago.
